On May 2nd, an off-leash pitbull attacked a shitzu being walked by a resident on trails in the Panther Peak area. The shitzu was taken to a veterinary hospital and euthanized shortly afterward. Apparently, the pitbull still lives with its owner, so residents in the area should consider safety precautions as well as their pet’s until the Sheriff’s investigation is completed and the case is resolved.
On May 6, the Sheriff investigated and filed a report (see below) and the State of New Mexico charged the pitbull owner with violations of several statutes. No notice or warning was provided to residents during the May 13th board meeting. On June 25, the State of New Mexico filed a criminal complaint against the pitbull owner who will be arraigned on July 23 in Magistrate Court, Courtroom 3, Judge Donna Bevacqua-Young. The case number is: M-49-MR-201401332.
Update: See comment on home page under July 16th post for arraignment details. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for October 17, 2014 with the same judge.
